Welcome to EGFFL

Started in 2014, The East Greenwich Flag Football League (EGFFL) is a non-profit 501c3 status organization for residents of the town of East Greenwich, Rhode Island.  EGFFL is a part of the NFL Flag program - the largest flag football program in the nation.

EGFFL provides boys and girls in grades Kindergarten through 9th Grade with the opportunity to enjoy the exciting 5 vs. 5 sport in a safe and nurturing environment. As the NFL Flag program states and EGFFL coaches can affirm: "Players benefit by being physically active through non-contact, continuous action while learning the fundamentals of football, lessons in teamwork and sportsmanship."

We are a co-ed league, both boys and girls on combined teams with five grade divisions of K/1st, 2nd/3rd, 4th/5th, 6th/7th, and 8th/9th and our Challenger Division for special needs children.

Registration opens in April, closes in May and we hold a combine in June.  Regular season play runs for seven weeks from early-September thru late-October, with playoffs running the first two weeks of November.  For select players, there is an All-Star RI State Flag Tournament in early-November.

EGFFL is a one day a week commitment, practicing 45-60 minutes, then playing immediately after 45-60 minutes.

Coaches in our league are directed to focus their efforts on sportsmanship, equal playing time and equal participation for in-game positions.   We direct coaches to provide every player with an opportunity to touch the ball on offense in every game, and we direct coaches to ensure equal playing time for all players in every half of a game.

EGFFL Parent Principles

Parents, athletes and coaches must work together for the best possible flag football experience and performance. The following suggestions are meant as general guidelines for parents. As a parent, you understand the daily pressures your child faces. We believe that flag football should be an outlet for fun. Encourage your child and allow them to have a good time.

  • Remember that your child learns more from your actions than your words. Practice good sportsmanship by being respectful to players, parents and coaches on both teams.
  • There is nothing wrong with applauding a good play made by the opponents. Parents can be good role models by appreciating the efforts made by both teams.
  • Most coaches are volunteers and work hard at what they do. To lessen confusion, and out of respect for their position, please allow your child’s coach to be the only one coaching players on the field.
  • Please refrain from loud or rude behavior.
  • Offer encouragement and positive reinforcement, not criticism, to your star player.
  • Encourage discipline by having your child arrive on time for practices and games.
  • Belonging to a team requires commitment. Parents can help children understand this through regular attendance and preparation.
  • Whenever possible, volunteer. This shows participants the value of being a team player.
  • Please respect the officials and their calls. It’s OK to disagree, but inappropriate to disparage.

CDC HEADS UP

While flag football is intended to be a non-contact sport, contact resulting in a concussion may occur.  Please review the information provided by the CDC for identifying, reporting and treating concussions.
